Ramana Maharshi always insisted that the animals in Ramanashram be treated with great care. He said that before the ashram was established, the land was their home, and if they could speak, they would assert their rights. There are many instances where he made sure they were given good ashram food, and it was one of the few areas where he could display a ferocious temper if an animal was abused or treated with obvious disrespect.
Practically every pet owner has known those moments were their animal communicates unconditional love for them, or a ferocious protection if the owner was threatened in any way. And what pet owner has not suffered emotional pain when his animal was hurt or sick?
